column reinforcement design rules

Basic rules to design column are listed following  

 A) LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT 

1.cross section area of steel bar should be more then 0.8 percent of gross cross sectional area of column and not more then 6 perecent of gross section area of column 

 2.the diameter of bar should be more then 12mm and less then 50mm 

 3.the minimum cover should be 40mm and can reduce to 25mm in case of small column 

4.the spacing of bar should be more then 300mm 

B) TRANSVERSE BAR/LATERAL TIE 

1.minimum dia should be moree then 6mm and 1/4th the dia of longitudinal bar 

2..the pitch of ties should not be more than the least of following 

a) least lateral dimension 

b)16 times the dia of longitudinal bar 

c)48 times the dia of bar
